What Philosophy? (quiz)

I'm not entirely sure about the validity of this.... :D I do believe that the happier people are the better off everyone would be - but it is true happiness, not superficial. A happy person makes others happy, behaves responsibly and helps others because they want to share. A happy person sees the pleasures of life and enjoys them consciously and mindfully. Happiness is on the approach to enlightenment. I don't think this would classify as hedonism, but my interpretation of the questions in the quiz led it to this conclusion on my beliefs. What philosophy do you follow? (v1.03) You scored as Hedonism Your life is guided by the principles of Hedonism : You believe that pleasure is a great, or the greatest, good; and you try to enjoy life’s pleasures as much as you can. “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die!” Hedonism 85% Existentialism 75% Utilitarianism 60% Strong Egoism 60% Kantianism 50% Nihilism 30% Apathy 30% Justice (Fairness) 15% Divine Command 0%

Self-World Barrier

This is what I was thinking about today whilst walking down the hill to work. Most of the time when I am particularly tired, but also at various other times, I will be existing pretty much inside my head, without interacting with or receiving much input from the outside world. These are a couple of examples: When I am walking to or from work, or really anywhere, I am sometimes completely unaware of my surroundings. I don't notice anything, but still get where I am going on auto-pilot. I am looking at the ground in from of my feet, but not really LOOKING because I don't notice anything that I see - I assume some part of my brain is checking for obstacles or something. My eyes aren't focused at this stage; everything is blurry. Sometimes I look around and I still am mainly in my head rather than "out there" so my eyes remain unfocused - everything is blurrier than normal and I still don't see anything any more than a cursory survey of my surroundings. Sometimes ...

Bespoke Tailoring

The most interesting thing I have found recently has got to be this blog by a bespoke Savile Row tailor - The English Cut . The sad people that you are, I bet you aren't even slightly interested! He talks about the world of bespoke tailoring, what makes a good suit and his own business. For some reason, I think this is the most interesting and amazing entry . Look at that beautiful shoulder seam! I've always been vaguely interested in tailoring and at some point will actually make myself a jacket, but I am currently too scared. It seems so much more difficult than making other things. I also have no idea really how these things are supposed to look or fit. Given that you can buy an absolutely awful, badly made, entirely synthetic jacket from some of the women's clothing shops in town for $300 (even on special), I should be able to make myself both a jacket and trousers out of really nice material (eg. $50/m) and still end up spending less money. The suit is in my head - it ...

The day I discovered I was a Pantheist

Yesterday I discovered that pretty mach the whole time I thought I was a Christian, as a child and young person, I was in fact a Pantheist, albeit, I suppose, a Christian Pantheist. Interesting. See this wikipedia article on Pantheism . Not to be confused with Panentheism , Pandeism or Panendeism . (!!) Specifically, pantheism is the beleif that God is IN the world, that god and the world are equal and one, and not that God is outside of the world. I feel a bit ripped off actually, that all that time I had a valid, named spiritual-religious belief and nobody told me. I struggled to make what people told me reconcile with what I thought to be true, when I never knew until now that what I believed was a real thing, as in, somthing that others had thought, and a recognised idea - although obviously considered wrong from the perspective of some religions. I'm not sure what my position is now. At the bottom of at least some of the pages referred to by the links above (eg. the pantheism ...

Philosophy and Psychological Disorders

On the Dilbert blog, by Scott Adams ( http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/ ), he has been talking about free-will, and whether or not it exists. This was my response in his comments section: Does it even matter whether or not free-will is an illusion, or false, or whatever? I mean, who cares? Does our knowledge of it being a true concept, or a false concept, actually affect our lives? I can't say that since I've read your blog about it that my actions or life has changed. So consideration of the topic is presumably irrelevant in this case. If we are programmed to act in ways as if free-will existed, then presumably it's ACTUAL existence doesn't matter. So that's my opinion. But that started me wanting to write about the following, which didn't seem appropriate for his comments, so I thought, "I know, how about my blog...". I recently decided that differing philosophical views, by which I mostly mean differing perceptions of the universe that prompt philosop...
