At the Moment...

Well, RIGHT now, I'm listening to a piece of music on an online Polish radio station that sounds like they chucked an orchestra down a really long flight of stairs, with alarmed accompaniment on the trumpet*. It's "alarmed" accompaniment because it sounds like the trumpet* player is observing the disaster, but was not able to remove his instrument from his mouth before expressing himself or calling for help. The next piece seems to be "tuning up, played by a swarm of bees". *May not actually be a trumpet; I'm not good with brass instruments. Could be a trombone. Other than that I am trying to learn Polish by new and instinctive means, gardening a little bit, and studying a few things. Today I put some seedlings into pots and put them into the glasshouse - it is not-cloudy and not-raining today, which is a change from the last 5-6 days. I also poured boiling water on some weeds in the path in the hope of killing them and stopping them from growing back f...

Music: Supergroove - Sitting Inside My Head

My currently most listened to song is Sitting Inside My Head ( lyrics ) by Supergroove . I've listened to it 20+ times in the last 3 days at work (lucky I have headphones). You should probably get "Postage - A best of" if you want to get a CD, as pretty much every song on it is good (as one would expect from a compilation). It's really hard to express how generally awesome Supergroove is, so that's why you should get a CD! They are said to be a "funk" band, which in itself is awesome, because what does that even mean? Their music is very humourous and quirky and a mixture of styles, and I love hearing NZ accents in songs, it makes me happy. The end.

Track 9

In this xkcd cartoon *, the "alt" text (mouse over to see) is so true. I bought the Kill Bill 1 CD maybe a week ago, and I have already listened to that 2 1/2 minute song about 50 times. *Of course, you should be religiously checking this website for updates in any case and thus have already seen it.

Some Not-Terribly-Good Music In-Jokes

Image
A lot of people aren't going to get some of these.... This totally made me laugh: These could be said about various instruments, just like Irish jokes can be made about any nationality. Why do so many people take an instant dislike to the viola? It saves time. How can you tell when a violist is playing out of tune? The bow is moving. How was the canon invented? Two violists were trying to play the same passage together. Why is a viola solo like a bomb? By the time you hear it, it's too late to do anything about it. Oboe jokes: How do you get an oboist to play A flat? Take the batteries out of his electric tuner. What's the difference between a SCUD missile and a bad oboist? A bad oboist can kill you. Random other ones: There's nothing I like better than the sound of a banjo, unless of course it's the sound of a chicken caught in a vacuum cleaner. What's the least-used sentence in the English language? "Isn't that the banjo player's Porsche?...

Cooking to Music

Image
Do you listen to music while cooking? I always used to when cooking because I cooked more complicated and involved foods more often, when I didn't have to go to work too. And this seems to encourage music listening. Now I sometimes do, generally on the days that G comes home late whereas I do not. Then I blare out the music and cook one of the slightly more involved dishes, like the lasagne today which had a layer of butter-fried chicken, mushroom and wine, and another layer of spinach, courgette, eggplant and pasta sauce. So essentially I had to prepare and cook two meals simultaneously and then combine them into one dish with layers of pasta (and cheese on top). Plus, there was an awful lot of it. I tend to listen to music like Marilyn Manson and Disturbed, which amuses me because cooking is so, domestic, and not - whatever that kind of music brings to mind. Sometimes I made it interesting and blared out Dvořák , "From The New World", instead. What I'd like to do is...

Shopping - Battery Charger and Marilyn Manson

Image
After spending 1.5 hours last night searching the entire house for the battery charger to charge the batteries for the digital camera, I didn't find it, and today we bought a new one. Thank goodness. Now I can start taking pictures again of everything. Then all I need is a digital SLR someday.... If we're lucky, the courier will deliver my stuff from ihug today and I can have internet at home by the weekend!! Otherwise it won't be until at least Monday. The sooner it's done the sooner... umm, something. I also bought this album at lunch time, Holy Wood by Marilyn Manson ( Amazon link ) Mine has a slip cover over it which is plain on the front and some weird picture on the back. It is also R18. Although I really like my other Marilyn Manson album and it is one of my favourite CDs I have and I really wanted to get another one, I didn't really want to buy any of them because (other than the fact that the newest available at the shop was from 2000 and none were cheaper ...
